Background of the Study
Excessive salt intake is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, particularly hypertension. In Ogun State, dietary habits have shifted dramatically with the increasing availability of processed foods and fast-food outlets, leading to higher sodium consumption among residents. High salt intake is associated with increased blood pressure, which in turn elevates the risk of heart disease and stroke (Oladipo, 2023; Adebayo, 2024). In urban areas of Ogun State, the convenience and affordability of high-salt foods have contributed to this trend, while rural communities may also be affected by traditional cooking practices that incorporate salt-heavy seasonings. Public health authorities have attempted to address this issue through awareness campaigns and nutritional guidelines, but the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases remains high. Understanding the relationship between salt consumption and cardiovascular health in Ogun State is crucial for developing targeted interventions aimed at reducing sodium intake and improving overall heart health.
Statement of the Problem
Cardiovascular diseases continue to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Ogun State, with excessive salt consumption identified as a major contributing factor. Despite ongoing public health initiatives to promote healthy eating, many residents maintain dietary habits that include high levels of salt. The widespread availability of processed foods, combined with limited nutritional education, exacerbates the risk. Additionally, cultural preferences and traditional cooking methods often favor salty flavors, further complicating efforts to reduce sodium intake (Eze, 2023). The resultant high prevalence of hypertension and other cardiovascular conditions places a significant burden on the healthcare system and affects overall quality of life. Without effective measures to reduce salt consumption, the risk of cardiovascular events remains high. This study aims to investigate the extent of salt consumption, its association with cardiovascular diseases, and potential strategies for promoting lower-sodium diets in Ogun State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of salt consumption among residents of Ogun State.
2. To evaluate the relationship between salt intake and cardiovascular disease prevalence.
3. To recommend public health interventions to reduce excessive salt consumption.
Research Questions
1. What is the average salt consumption among residents in Ogun State?
2. How is excessive salt intake associated with the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases?
3. What strategies can effectively reduce salt consumption in this population?
Research Hypotheses
1. High salt consumption is significantly associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk.
2. Lack of nutritional education contributes to excessive salt intake.
3. Public health interventions targeting salt reduction will lead to a measurable decrease in cardiovascular events.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on both urban and rural populations in Ogun State. Data will be collected through dietary surveys, health assessments, and interviews. Limitations include reliance on self-reported dietary data and potential confounding factors such as other dietary habits.
